About Us
EFCT (European Football Confederation of Theaters) is the governing body that regulates and administers European football for theaters. Its goal is to consolidate existing events and develop the connection between sports and theaters with a spirit of unity, solidarity, and fair play
The European Theater Football Championship was founded in 1970 from an idea by Maestro Claudio Abbado.
To date, a total of 137 teams have participated in the Championship at least once. Among them, the team with the most appearances is Teatro alla Scala in Milan, with 40 participations, followed by Theater Basel with 39, Teatro La Fenice in Venice (30), Opernhaus Zürich (29), and Staatstheater Stuttgart (28). Teatro alla Scala also holds the record for consecutive appearances (37 since 1986, still ongoing), ahead of Opernhaus Zürich (28: from 1970 to 1997), Stadttheater Bern (23: from 1977 to 1999), and Staatstheater Stuttgart (22: from 1970 to 1991).
The teams with the most titles are Ravenna Festival, with 6 championships, Opernhaus Zürich, with 5 victories, and Grand Théâtre de Genève, with 4 titles.
The Project
Since the Milan 2022 edition, thanks to the support of the Italian organization Sport-X, EFCT has introduced video highlights of the matches, opening up to new communication and media channels to increase the event's visibility and thus providing participants with a true sports experience.
In 2023, the first "Scala del Calcio trophy” was played between the "Teatro alla Scala" of Milan and the "Teatro La Fenice" of Venice at the San Siro stadium. The second edition, dedicated to Luciano Aricci, took place at the Penzo stadium in Venice.
In 2024, EFCT expanded its horizons by bringing back the "Coppa Italia dei Teatri" for its ninth edition.
The EFCT project envisions the development of national competitions in addition to the European championship. By 2027, the initiative will become multisport with the "TOG" (Theaters Olympics Games).
